The Art of Tibetan Literature

Abstract:

Tibetan literature has a long, rich and diverse history and as such it is characterised by traditional as well as innovative qualities. It is comprised of both religious and secular writings that boasts a wide range of themes and forms. My talk will give a brief introduction to this invaluable literary wealth of the world by focusing on six key issues: the definition of Tibetan literature, its development, scope, legacy, shortcomings, and the role of women.

 

Speaker's bio:

Geshe Beri Jigme Wangyal is a Senior Lecturer at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS), Saranath, India, where he is also the head of the Centre for Tibetan Literature. He has published over 31 books on Tibetan Poetry and Literature, History and Buddhist Philosophy. He was born in Tibet and served as a Member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile in Dharamsala.
